Abstract/Summary:
Fairness perception is a kind of subjective emotional experience based on the judgment of fair and are inevitably based on a kind of neutral reference outcome. The reference outcome that is used to evaluate a given situation is itself the product of complicated social comparison processes. This subjective judgment of fairness perception is not only influenced by the program itself, but also by the social context.Especially the shared experience is one of the very important situational factors. The present study aims to elucidate that whether shared inequity with others effect our fairness perception and combine social comparison theory to explore its underlying mechanism behind its potential impact. The research through three experiments adopts a modified version of the three-person ultimatum game to explore the above questions. In experiment 1 we used a virtual experimental scenario to examine how people perceive fairness when they share unfair experience with others. The results indicated that compared to the alone unfairness condition, participants in the experimental group feel less unfairness and the rejection rate is reduced, that is,people feel less unfair when they shared unfairness with others. In experiment 2 we also used the virtual context to further exclude the experimental results because of compared to group of shared experience, unjust experience alone usually increase their sense of unfairness. The results showed that compare to the control group, when shared unfair experience with others they felt less unfair, and lower rejection rate, that is,its unfair perception reduced. Therefore excludes another explanation of the results in Experiment 1.In experiment 3,eye-movement technique as well as social comparison theory was used to further investigate the underlying mechanism. We assume that when subjects shared unfairness with others,he/she will automatically refer to the distribution of another person in a similar position, and this process may reduce the inequity perception. The results showed that there was no significant difference in behavioral indicators between "fair perception" and "rejection rate".While eye movement indicators did not show significant differences in terms of the first fixation duration, dwell time, and fixation count.Further analysis was found by regression analysis that The ratio of fixation count, dwell time, and fixation count to another common experience person can significantly predict the fair perception of subjects. That is,when the subjects are more concerned about the shared experience person, the more reference, the more able to predict its fairness perception. The data suggest that the perception of fairness not only depends on the fairness of their own income, but also depends on social context(i.e.,the fairness of the others’ benefits in the similar situation). These results also show that in the process of pursuing fairness, people will automatically make adjustments according to their situation. In a word, people will seek common equity, the pursuit of equality.
