This translation report is based on the translation of the first chapter of G,Hofstede's Culture's Consequences: Comparing Values,Behaviors,Institutions and Organizations Across Nations. The source text is a sociological informative text, which elaborates the Culture Dimension Theory in a detailed and systematic way, posing much impact to cross-culture research.Reference, according to Halliday & Hasan, means that “something cannot explain itself but needs to rely on other things for explanation”,which functions as an important cohesive device frequently used both in Chinese and English texts. If we fail to handle it our translation will be fragmented, and could even distort the original meaning, thus bringing misunderstanding to readers and damaging their reading experience. This report, based on Halliday & Hasan's text cohesion theory and Hu Zhuanglin's interpretation of this theory, compares the similarities and differences between Chinese and English in personal reference, demonstrative reference and comparative reference, and work out solutions to reference translation, including the method of omission, repetition of referent and conversion of reference items.
