With the accumulation of wealth, more and more Chinese choose to immigrate to the U.S.,and hope to gain new opportunities in the new environment with sophisticated social management rules.Since China and the U.S.do not share the same language and culture background,it is necessary to translate the submitted immigration application documents into a type which is more smoothly accepted by U.S.officers in charge of immigration service. However, this type of translation has not yet gained due attention. The report, based on the author's translation practice of U.S.immigration application documents, analyzes and summarizes difficulties identified in the translation process and gives corresponding solutions under the guidance of Skopostheorie and its rules of skopos, coherence and fidelity. The author found that the translation technique of omission can be adopted in translating Chinese political words, phrases and sentences,as well as the organizations which issue documents of honors and awards.Besides, the name ellipsis of province or country in the immigration documents is a common phenomenon and should be clarified during translation to ensure clear expressions in English. In addition,Chinese sentences without subjects can become forceful in English when addition is used to highlight the subject.Lastly, abbreviations often contain rich contents and should be explained to improve the acceptability of the translation. In order to realize better translation of the immigration application documents, translation methods of omission, addition, and explanation are adopted in the author's translation practice.By studying the translation of U.S.immigration application documents, the author provides valuable suggestions for those who are engaged in the translation of the same field as depicted in this report.
