During simultaneous interpreting, lexical cohesion has an important role to play. This thesis aims to define the role of lexical cohesion in simultaneous interpreting in international conferences and to find out the reasons why lexical cohesion in the SL in some cases is different from lexical cohesion in TL.In a bid to solve the above problem, the author provides a working definition and categorization of lexical cohesion.According to the above working definition and categorization, there are two major types of lexical cohesion in Premier Li Keqiang’s Speeches at the Davos World Economic Forum from 2013 to 2015.Based on schema theory, effort model and theories on the relationship between cohesion and coherence, the author analyzes important roles of lexical cohesion in simultaneous interpreting in international conferences.First, during the process of SI lexical cohesion in the SL can help SI interpreters make anticipation.Second, lexical cohesion in target language helps achieve coherence in TL in SI of international conferences. After an analysis of the difference between the choice of lexical cohesion in SL and TL within the theoretical framework of adaptation theory, the author finds out the reasons for such change.Based on the above analysis, the author summarizes some strategies adopted by the interpreter on how to handle cohesion to improve SI output. In conclusion, this research boasts both theoretical and practical significance.Theoretically,it will contribute to interpreting studies and researches on lexical cohesion in simultaneous interpreting.Practically,it can shed some light on how to improve interpreting skills by making better use of lexical cohesion.
