Semiotics,as a study of meaning, originated from the philosophical thinking of Plato and Aristotle in the ancient Greece and started to be applied in translation field in the 1990 s.Its main representatives are Charles Morris and Roman Jakobson. It gets rid of the traditional translation theories that simply studied translation problems from either linguistic perspective, pragmatic perspective or communicative perspective.Based on the commonalities among language systems,it includes all subjective and objective factors among both verbal and nonverbal systems.Different from other translation theories,Semiotics involves the study of various factors in the process of translation, concentrating on the articulation of meaning, and it breaks the unilateralism of the tradition research. In the framework of Semiotics, this thesis carries out a systematically comparative analysis of Wang Wei's poetry and its English version.Based on Morris' semiotic meaning theory, the thesis comparatively analyzes Wang Wei's poetry and its English version from three levels: the semantic level, the syntactic level and the pragmatic level. In addition,it has explored the effective translation strategies and translation methods that the translators can choose to achieve the equivalent transference of referential meaning, linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning during the translation process of Wang Wei's poems. It is found that the translators should consider the equivalent transference of meaning, manipulating the domestication and the foreignization translation strategies and the corresponding translation methods to achieve semantic equivalence, syntactic equivalence and pragmatic equivalence in the process of translation. It is hoped that this thesis could provide some help and broaden the viewpoint for the following study of Wang Wei's poetry and offer some references for the relative study in this field.
