Hotel introduction is a publicity material for advertising services and amenities,and it provides a reference for customers to book hotels.In recent years,many scholars have researched on hotel introductions from different perspectives,for instances: Systemic Functional Grammar,Genre Analysis,Inter-discursive and Critical Discourse Analysis.Most of them made a comparative analysis of Chinese and English hotel introductions and explain differences and similarities from culture dimension.But few researchers propose a comprehensive framework to analyze introductions of hotels in different levels from both move structure and realization of interpersonal meaning.Communicative purpose of a text determines methods of realizing interpersonal meaning.Accordingly,means of realization of interpersonal meaning affect realization of specific purposes of a text.This study combines ESP school’s genre analysis model and interpersonal meaning of Systemic Functional Grammar to analyze three groups of American hotel introductions in both macro and micro aspects.According to the collapsed sub-market class in the official website of Smith Travel Research(a company provides analysis of market share for global hotel industry),this thesis classifies 60 American hotel introductions into three groups: 20 luxurious and upper upscale,20 upscale and upper mid-scale,20 mid-scale and economy.Based on this classification,three corpora------corpus A,corpus B and corpus C are established to correspond to the three groups of hotel introductions.Then comparisons of move structures and realization of interpersonal meaning are conducted among the three corpora.By doing so,the author tries to find some differences and similarities of communicative purposes of the three corpora.After analysis,it finds that American luxurious and upper upscale hotel introductions aim to provide hotel information about credentials and features,and stress potential customers’ experiences;that American upscale and upper mid-scale hotel introductions focus on advertising its full service and amenities to project their good images in potential customers’ minds;and that American mid-scale and economy hotel introductions put emphasis on motivating customers to choose their services by price.The findings may give some implications to those who configure or translate domestic hotel introductions into English from the perspective of move structure and realization of interpersonal meaning,and remind them the consideration of marketing factors besides the text writing itself.Last but not least,the study tries to arouse hotel introduction writers’ genre awareness while writing hotel introductions and similar discourses writers’ genre awareness.
