With its booming economy and increasing international influence, China has attracted more and more people. And it is reported that China will become the most desirable tourist destination all across the world by 2020, which imposes huge pressure on tourism industry, for instance, the hotels. In consideration of the important role of hotels, a great deal of attention has been paid to the translation of China’s hotel introductions. However, there are still defects, which are in need of further improvements. With the assistance of the theory of genre analysis, the author intends to delve into the structural and linguistic features in English and Chinese hotel introductions from the perspective of schematic struction and realization patterns. After a comparative study, the author will summarize the similarities and difference and point out how to realize the genre equivalence in translation from both the structural level and grammatical level so as to better realize the communicative goals of hotel introductions. The author establishes three monolingual corpora, consisting of 90 samples of hotel introductions, namely 30 English translation versions of China’s hotel introductions,30 English versions of hotel introductions in English-speaking countries and 30 Chinese versions of China’s hotel introductions. All these 90 samples are collected from their official websites, which makes the analysis more convincing and more objective. Firstly, hotel introduction is defined as an applied genre. The author analyzes all the 90 samples from the perspective of schematic structure as well as GSP formula proposed by Hasan. In the second place, following the same research process, samples in the three corpora will be analyzed from the micro level, the realization patterns. During the analysis, the author will figure out how the three metafunctions of language get realized. Last but not the least, through comparisons between the corpora, the author will conclude how many adjustments we have made in translation from the two perspectives. Meanwhile, defects remained in the translation will also be figured out and practical suggestions will be made accordingly. Based on the findings above, the translation of hotel introductions will be adjusted properly so as to cater to the linguistic preferences of people in English-speaking countries. Only in this way can the hotel introductions realize the communicative goals of description and persuasion. This analysis is of great significance for our further studies in this field. Theoretically, this thesis enriches the theories concerning translation through providing a new method for the analysis of text translation. Practically, this thesis proposes a new dimension for the translation of China’s hotel introductions, the genre equivalence, which is instructive for further study. |
