| English novels have found their large popularity among Chinese readers in recent years;however,some translation works that are strictly confined to the original texts,have inevitablely brought the target readers terrible reading experience and even caused the decrease of the sales volumes.In A Textbook of Translation of Peter Newmark,most of novels were defined as expressive texts,in which semantic translation was preferred.He also remarked popular novels could be regarded as vocative texts.Focusing on readers? reading experience,communicative translation can meet the requirements for English-Chinese novel translation.Based on A Spool of Blue Thread,the text features,as well as the standards,requirements and purposes of novel translation,this report tries to explore the possibilities and principles of Communicative Translation for English-Chinese popular novel translation and summarize the techniques used in translation.This report consists of five parts: Chapter One involves the introduction to the author,the book,the translation material and the significance of the study;Chapter Two,process description,includes the preparation,while-translating and proof-reading;Chapter Three,theoretical framework,talks about the introduction to Peter Newmark?s communicative translation theory,reasons and principles for the theory in novel translation;Chapter Four,case study in novel translation,will make a detailed analysis and summary in two aspects including the translation for descriptions and the translation for dialogues: as for the first part,translation techniques in word and sentence level including diction,conversion,amplification,inversion and division will be analyzed;as for the difficult points in dialogue translation including information conveyance,the feelings and personalities of characters,they can be tackled by showing speakers? intentions directly,adding modal particles and choosing personalized languages;Chapter Four comes to the conclusions and reflections of this report. |
