A Report On The Translation Of Corporate Discourse(Chapter 3)

This translation report based on the E-C translation of Chapter 3 of Corporate Discourse,an academic book written by professor Ruth Breeze of University of Navarra in Spain.In this book,Professor Breeze examines the corporate discourse from the perspective of discourse analysis,looking in detail at the discourse used by corporations to communicate with their employees,investors,clients and other stakeholders against the background of the twenty-first-century economy.The translator selects Chapter 3 of this book as the text to be translated.This chapter makes a brief outline of the major trends in company–employee communication in European and US companies today,analyzing a genre chain of the job advertisement,job interview,orientation sessions and inhouse newsletters.The source text is about the analysis of corporate discourse,in which certain theories and academic terms in linguistics and management are involved.Based on an in-depth analysis,the translator concluded that the source text is characterized by concise language,complex sentence and strict logical relations.Therefore,the translator must ensure the accuracy of the content while taking into account the target readers' understanding and response to the target text.In this regard,the translator adopts Eugene A.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,which is about the functional equivalence between the two languages concerned,to guide this translation practice.By adopting this theory,the translator reorganizes the target text in a most idiomatic way to convey the contents of the original,not adhering to the form or word order of the original.In this report,the translator explains the application of the theory in translating the source text on the lexical,sentential and textual level with concrete examples.The whole report consists of five chapters.The first chapter is a general introduction to the translation task.Chapter Two is about the process of pre-translation preparation.Chapter Three describes the process of the whole translation practice.Chapter Four is the case study.In this chapter,Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory is introduced,followed by the related translation strategiestechniques at the lexical,sentential and textual levels.And the last chapter of this report is a conclusion,summarizing the experience acquiring in this translation process and room to be improved in future translation practice.
