This thesis consists of the source text of “Head Start at Ages 3 and 4 Versus Head Start Followed by State Pre-K: Which Is More Effective?”,its Chinese version and the report on the translation.The source text probes into the effects of two pre-kindergarten programs put forward by American policy makers as ways of expanding preschool opportunities for low-income children and into the reasons why parents choose one or the other program.The Chinese version provides parents and policy makers in China with some latest findings for their reference.And the translation practice deepens the translator’s understanding of the related translation theory.The translation report introduces the source text including its authors,its language features and the motivation of the translator’s before it gives a brief description of the key points of the theory of “translation as adaptive variation” presented by Mr.MA Xiao.Then the analyses of some examples are given to explain how the translator tries to produce variations at the lexical and syntactical levels so that her translation may meet the needs of the target readers.The translation experience is also summed up.
