A Study On Interpreter's Subjectivity In Court Settings

With the rapid development of globalization,more foreign-related disputes are on the rise in China,resulting in more demands for court interpreting.Court interpreting,as a form of interpreting taking place in court settings,is drawing more attention in recent years.Comparing to interpreting in other settings,court interpreting is more special and important as it is involved with laws and regulations.However,related research or studies on court interpreting are yet to be carried out in many aspects,such as the interpreter's subjectivity in court interpreting.Based on text analysis of a transcribed case,this thesis sets out to explore how subjectivity is manifested in court setting from two main aspects,namely visibility and non-neutral standing of the interpreter.To this end,the author would probe into the following three main directions:(1)In what aspects is interpreter subjectivity manifested in court interpreting settings?(2)For what reasons is interpreter subjectivity manifested by the interpreter?(3)How is interpreter subjectivity correlated with interpreting ethics in court interpreting? By answering the three questions,the author aims to provide some references for court interpreters to manifest subjectivity in a proper manner to facilitate a sound processing of the trial.Also,the author would point out that the interpreter shall maintain a balance between subjectivity and ethics,instead of overly manifesting subjectivity.As this research is carried out based on the analysis of the recording of a student court interpreter,it may have several limitations,thus,all further discussions from different scholars are welcomed.
