A Report On Translating The 2014 Annual Report Of Exxon Mobil

In this report,the author selected the first half of the 2014 annual summary report of Exxon Mobil as the original text,which mainly contains an opening letter from the Chief Executive Officer,a financial and operating summary,and an introduction to upstream oil and gas exploration projects,downstream refining and distribution business as well as the chemical business.After analyzing the features of the original text,the author noticed that it contains a large number of terms and long sentences,as well as frequently uses passive voice and first-person pronouns.In terms of text types,the annual report mainly consists of informative text,operative text,and audio-medial text.In the translation process,the author compared the differences between English and Chinese,and adopted translation strategies including change of order,conversion,division,as well as adding and cutting.The report consists of five parts.The first part is about the description of the task,including the background of the selected annual report,significance of the task,and features of the original text.The second part describes the preparation work,including the selection of parallel texts,search tools and text type analysis,as well as the plan-making.The third part records how the author overcame extra-linguistic difficulties and obstacles brought about by terms.The fourth part focuses on case studies,showing the translation strategies adopted by the author.The last part summarizes the lessons learned by the author and the limitations of this project.
