Textual Cohesion And E-C Translation

Since the discourse analysis was introduced into the field of translation in the 1990 s,scholars at home and abroad have paid huge attention to cohesion,the core of text.Being the supreme unit in the language system,text is an important subject of translation studies.While cohesion is related to the semantic relation when organizing text and is the visible web of text.In the process of translation,translators’ command of cohesive devices directly influences the understanding of original text and the quality of translation.Cohesion Theory is of great significance and feasibility to translation practice.Based on the translation of several chapters of Jane Austen,Game Theorist,this thesis explores the application of Cohesion Theory of M.A.K.Halliday and R.Hasan and analyzes different cohesive devices between English and Chinese.Devices such as reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion help generate a translation characterized by proper cohesiveness,semantic integration,and faithfulness to the original text.
