Translation Report Of Missing Microbes Utilizing Communicative And Semantic Translation Theory

Scientific and technological English is the kind of English used in scientific and engineering work,thesis,textbook,report and presentation.It has clear logical thinking,relatively fixed expression,and objectivity,which demand high standard of translation.Instructed by Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation,the first two chapters of Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics is Fueling Our Modern Plagues have been translated to study translation tactics and strategies.The chapters tell the importance of microbes in ecosystem as well as in human body.The source text contains much of medical and biological knowledge,and uses plenty of corresponding terms.Therefore,translating practice would face many challenges.This practice report comprehensively analyzes the source text from the perspectives of terms,text feature and author’s language habits.It also instructs the translating practice by following Peter Newmark’s Semantic and Communicative Translation theory,in word and in sentence.Semantic Translation is applied to reserve the language feature and expression of the author,including wording,objective material,etc.Meanwhile,Communicative Translation is used to adjust translated text,making it more understandable and acceptable for the target reader.However,the best solution is combining two ways of translation to save accuracy,objectivity,and the effect of the source text,so to bring the reader of translated text with similar reading experience of what the original reader gets from the source.This practical report has five chapters in total.The first chapter gives introduction of the author and the content of the book,and key problems that should be dealt with during translating.The second chapter introduces Peter Newmark’s Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation theory,and related text-typology theory.The third chapter describes translation procedure.The forth chapter gives detailed study on translation tactics and strategies.And the final chapter is the conclusion.
