This paper is an empirical investigation of the interpersonal indifference of civil servants, teachers and health care workers.A questionnaire was developed and used to examine the interpersonal attitudes among the three selected social groups.Survey results were analyzed and compared.I collected completed questionnaires from 214 civil servants,196 teachers and 226 health care workers. My quantitative analysis showed that there were no significant differences on total scores of interpersonal indifferences across these three social groups.Interestingly, the “fear of error”(one of the dimensions)scores were lower for health care workers than those of civil servants and teachers. In addition to questionnaires,I randomly recruited 5 civil servants,4 teachers, and 5 health care workers for semi-structured interviews.Following the principles of Grounded Theory(GT),I first read through the contents of the line-by-line coding to define the views and behaviors of the three groups of interviewees. This analysis resulted in axial coding and selective coding, and finally to three core codes.Among the interpersonal indifference factors in the core codes,I found that the three social groups differed in rescue knowledge in terms of interpersonal indifference. The major findings of this investigation include:(1)there were no significant differences in interpersonal indifference among civil servants, teachers and health care workers;for the “fear of error”,it was found that the scores of health care workers were significantly lower than other groups,(2)the interpersonal indifferences of civil servants, teachers and health care workers are dependent on many factors, and are interdependent and difficult to differentiate,(3)the interpersonal indifferences of civil servants, teachers, health care workers are influenced by external environmental factors;for example, compared to health care workers, interpersonal indifferences of civil servants and teachers, appear to be significantly affected by the characteristics of helpers,(4)the reason for the observed difference between health care workers and the other two social groups is closely related to the health care workers’ group characteristics,(5)we can improve theinterpersonal indifference of social groups at the macro-level and micro-level,and(6)the attitude of three groups toward interpersonal indifferences showed some level of conformity: the overall trend of the interpersonal indifference is basically positive. In summary, the existence of interpersonal indifferences appears to be an individual phenomenon.
