A Report On The Translation Of-ly Adverbs In The News Sorority (Excerpts)

The book The News Sorority(excerpts)is the biography of three famous female journalists in America——Diane Sawyer,Christiane Amanpour and Katie Couric.Through interviewing numerous relatives,friends,classmates and colleagues of the subjects,and collecting a great quantity of first-hand materials,the writer of the book Sheila Weller truthfully reproduces the life experiences of the subjects and how they overcame various difficulties to become outstanding journalists,which may enlighten readers on how to be successful in career,especially in the field of journalism.Therefore,the author thinks the book is worth reading.As a kind of non-fiction literary genre,the biography embodies both historicity and literariness.It has become one of the important fields of literature research in recent years.Accordingly,biography translation has become increasingly important.However,the study on biography translation now is far from enough.In this report,the material selected for translation is the first half part of chapter one of part one in the book.This part mainly describes Diane’s experiences from her birth to the beginning of her journalistic career after graduating from the university.In the process of reading the source text,the author noticed that on the aspects of style and textual feature,as the biography belongs to literary genre,its language is relatively delicate,and a large number of verbs,adjectives and adverbs are used in the source text to make the images of the subject more vivid.During the translation process,the author noticed that adverbs,especially adverbs ending with –ly(-ly adverbs)appear with high frequency,and they have rich connotations and flexible positions in sentences,which bring much difficulty for understanding and translating.Biographies are informative texts with delicate language,and the historicity and the literariness of biographies require the translator to deliver the information in the source text accurately and naturally,so the author studied –ly adverbs and explored several translation methods for –ly adverbs——syntactic linearity,change of word order,conversion of part of speech,division,back translation.The author hopes this report can provide some reference for accurately translating biographies and increase people’s attention to biography translation.
