A Report On The Interpreting Practice For The OECD Expert Team Seminar In Guangzhou

Dialogue interpreting is a three-party interaction,with an interpreter mediating between interlocutors of distinct discourse systems.Ideally,the interpreter takes turn to interpret after one interlocutor stops,and then the next interlocutor speaks.Nonetheless,turns do not always occur alternately in real practices.This report,based on the Chinese-English interpreting practice for the OECD seminar in Guangzhou on July 6th,2016,demonstrates that turn-taking in dialogue interpreting often does not comply with the ideal scenario.Dialogue interpreters do not always take turn to interpret.On the contrary,in some cases,they may create or ignore turns,or their turns may be interrupted by interlocutors.This report begins with a description of the basic information of the interpreting task.Following that are the pre-task preparation of knowledge,glossary and communication,the interpreting process and the difficulties encountered,as well as feedback from the client and self-evaluation after the task.The report analyzes the irregular turns and the coping tactics in this interpreting practice,which speaks to the importance of properly turn management in dialogue interpreting.It also summarizes and proposes suggestions for coping with irregular turns.
