This report aims at summarizing the theories and techniques or skills employed in an empirical study of translating some excerpts from the novel Blood of Victory,an espionage novel written by the American bestselling writer Alan Furst. The novel tells a story which took place during the World War Two when a Russian emigre journalist I.A.Serebin was recruited by the British secret services to participate in a clandestine operation to prevent German importation of Romania oil.In this novel,Alan had combined remarkable authenticity and atmosphere with the complexity and excitement of an outstanding spy thriller.Apart from a detailed and historical accuracy of a Europe in that age,the novel shapes a group of distinct figures by individualized description of their relationships, actions, discourse styles, emotions, features and behavior. With an analysis of the characteristics presented in this novel, the translator selected the theory of artistic reproduction and representation as a theoretic guidance through the translation of the first part of the beginning chapter: A Call to Arms. The report focuses on addressing seven aspects of problems the translator encountered during the translation practice, namely reproduction of conceptual connotations,of the author's particular writing style,of the character's features, behavior, relationship and relevant actions,of conversational mood or emotions.By providing solutions to these problems, the translator made great efforts to ensure an accurate, fluent and loyal translation while maintaining the style and artistic originality of the novel and therefore target readers can appreciate it the same way as those who read the original. After undertaking this task, the translator has got a deeper understanding towards the artistic reproduction and representation theory. He comes to the conclusions that in literary translation,a translator should comprehensively consider the contextual influence of factors such as background, plots, conflicts, character features and implicit connotations before setting out to translate a novel, rather than translate it word-for-word,and that to realize that purpose calls for a good performance of Translator Subjectivity. This report is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is task description which renders basic information of the novel Blood of Victory and its author;the second part is the description of the translation process from pre-translation preparation to translation quality control;the third part, being the main body of the report,is the case analysis which illustrates the application of artistic reproduction and representation on typical cases;and last comes to the fourth part which is a conclusion of this report.
