| The translation report is based on the translation of The History of Xinjiang, which is co-edited by Guan Shouxin and Wan Xueyu. The translation is guided by Eugene A.Nida’s translation theory of functional equivalence. The history and culture of Xinjiang are described in this book, including geographies, classics, legends and ethnic groups’ rise and fall. The source text is an informative text, which falls into historical category and aims to convey the facts of Xinjiang. The source text is featured by short sentences with several verbs and cultural-loaded words, such as allusions and allegories. In order to faithfully deliver the information and dig out the deep cultural connotations, the functional equivalence theory is applied at four levels,i.e.,the lexical, syntactic, discourse and cultural levels. To achieve faithfulness in the target text, domestication translation strategy is adopted and several translation methods are used, such as annotation, omission, substitution, word conversion and voice conversion etc..The report is divided into five chapters.Chapter I is the introduction of the source text and the authors and the significance of the translation project.Chapter II is a brief description of the process of translation.Chapter III is the introduction of the functional equivalence theory.Chapter IV is the application of the functional equivalence theory. This chapter analyzes the difficulties of the translation mainly at the lexical, syntactic, discourse and cultural levels.Chapter V is the summary of the translation project, including reflections and limitations. The translation project has practical values. It may enable the target readers to have a panoramic view of Xinjiang, provide references to Xinjiang historical study and promote cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. |
