A Report On The Translation Of The Gendered Society(Chapter Ten)

The translation task is The Gendered Society published by Oxford University Press in New York in 2011,which is written by Michael Kimmel who is the Professor of Sociology at the Stony Brook University in New York.The translation task is finished by five fellow students and the translator in a translation group.The translator is responsible for the translation of the tenth Chapter with around twenty thousands words.The tenth chapter of the The Gendered Society(the fourth edition)directly or indirectly represented a current social state of women who is being disrespected or discriminated.For example,there are some gender inequalities rooted in the male dominated society,since the media disseminate the male-centered gender culture and pay no attention to the women and even demeaned them.Through intensive readings and studies,The Gendered Society expounded the differences between men and women in the aspect of sociology.According to the classification of Newmark's text typology,the book is a text that regards informative text as a major and expressive text as a minor.So,the translator adopted communicative translation as a major and semantic translation as a minor during the process of translation.This translation practice report is comprised of five parts.In the first part,it's mainly about the introduction of this translation project,its features,meanings and the introduction of author are included;the second part is the description of the source text including its style and influences;the third part is the lead in of Newmark's translation theory;the fourth part is the case analysis which linked the theory with the translation practice;in the fifth translation summary part,the author concludes the deficiency and lessons through the translation process.
