This report, based on one English-Chinese translation project-Subscription Booklet for Non-U.S.Investors,compares and analyses the differences and similarities of the linguistic characteristics of the two languages and sums up the corresponding translation strategies.Under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, the report summarizes the translation experience of English business contracts.Firstly, the report starts from the translation of words.According to the characteristics of words in the original text, the translator puts forward the corresponding translation strategies. For the technical terms, they are very esoteric. With the help of dictionaries and network tools, the translator translates them into the corresponding Chinese technical terms. For the archaic words, they are very formal and their meanings vary in different contexts. Therefore, the translator translates them flexibly in the different contexts. For the coordinate structures, they are often used in the business contract, but it is difficult to find the corresponding expressions to translate the original language from the target language,so the translator deals with these words in different ways according to different situations. For the verbal nominalization structures, they are widely used in English. The translator translates these nominalized verbs into Chinese verb-object constructions or subject-predicate structures considering Chinese way of expression.Secondly, the report focuses on the translation of sentences. In accordance with the characteristics of sentences in the original text,on the one hand the translator deals with the word order of the original text.If the English sentence structures are consistent with the Chinese ones,or if the chronological order or logical order of the English sentences coincides with the Chinese ways of narrating and analyzing, the translator just translates the English sentences according to the original word order. If the target language and the original language are different in the way of expression, the translator adjusts and rearranges the original word order in accordance with the expression way of the target language. On the other hand, there are many long and complex sentences in the English business contract, which are well structured. While many Chinese sentences are short and loose in structure. Therefore, the translator splits the grammar units of the English sentences and translates the independent phrases or subordinate clauses into short Chinese sentences.
