The Upper Paleolithic period in north China is the period of transition from the Paleolithic age to the Neolithic age,human adapted and changed their behavior pattern constantly under the natural environment which had alternating temperature,and the plant processing tools could reflect the changes on the way of human existence.This paper has a further study on changes of human behavior patterns in the Upper Paleolithic period from north China,through the analysis of the plant processing tools which were excavated from Shizitan,Xiachuan and Longwangchan Site.This paper is divided into five parts.The first chapter is about the origin and development of grinding stone,and the discoveries and researches abroad and in China.The second chapter introduces the glacial and interglacial nature environment of north China in the Upper Paleolithic period.The third chapter describes the location and characteristics of more than 40 plant processing tools unearthed from Shizitan,Xiachuan and Longwangchan Site about29000-12000 BP.The forth chapter analyzes the diversity functions of grinding stones through three angles about the production technology,colorful prehistoric life and survival mode,such as kinds of plant resources,minerals and ornaments,reflects the prehistoric human revolution about the complexity of production technology,the increase of intensive collection,the emergence of cultural factors and the semi-sedentary life in the Upper Paleolithic period.The last chapter makes a summary.Prehistorical plant processing tools have been given a wide attention both abroad and in China,however,as a result of the small unearthed quantity in the Upper Paleolithic period,plenty of discoveries and researches are still concentrated in the Neolithic age.The unearthed grinding stones in north China provide evidence for researching the Upper Paleolithic this transitional period.Therefore,this paper plays an influential role on studying the prehistoric human survival mode and the positive response of human to the changing environment in the Middle Yellow River.
