A Study Of C-E Translation Of Cultural Relics Names

With the implementation of the policy of Reform and Opening-up in 1978 and the acceleration of the “Going Global” of Chinese culture,the cultural exchanges between China and other countries have been increasingly frequent.Museums in China provide an important platform for foreign visitors to have a better knowledge of ancient China's politics,economy,culture and history.Therefore,the quality of museum texts' translation has a great impact on cultural communication.As a treasure-house,Shanxi Museum shows the glorious history and culture of Shanxi Province.The translation of information about cultural relics in Shanxi Museum plays an indispensable role in the dissemination of Shanxi culture.This paper is a report based on the translation of the names of cultural relics collected in Shanxi Museum.From October,2015 to November,2016,the author translated the three-dimensional data of selective cultural relics in Shanxi Museum,the explanatory texts(Unit One and Unit Two)of cultural relics in Shanxi Museum,mainly including bronzes,potteries,ceramics,brick carvings and paintings.Aiming to guide the following translation work on cultural relics and make my contributions to the spreading of glorious culture of Shanxi,the author discusses the problems and causes in the whole process of C-E translation of cultural relics names and put forward the corresponding solutions to the problems.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter One is an introduction,including the background,significance and content of the project.In Chapter Two,the author described the process of translation project,which includes three stages: preparation before translation,translation process and proofreading after translation.In Chapter Three,the author analyzed the problems that appeared in the process of C-E translation of cultural relics' names,that is,inaccuracy of diction,unbalance of structure,and inappropriateness of information,and the causes of these problems were also discussed.In Chapter Four,the author put forward the corresponding measures to solve the problems mentioned in Chapter Three,which include consulting parallel texts,rearranging the attributive modifiers and adding or deleting certain information.Chapter Five is a summary of this report,consisting of experience and knowledge learnt from the translation practice.
