| As his debut novel, The Kite Runner was published in 2003 by Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini. Since its publication, the novel has become one of the best sellers in the world, and has been translated into 55 languages and published at more than 70 countries with many awards.Owing to the tone of the first person, The Kite Runner tells the readers about the initiation of Amir. Especially, it presents the happy time and true friendship between Amir and Hassan in their childhood, Amir’s new life in America for escaping from the war and his redemption after he grew up. At different stages, Amir made his efforts to make up his sin to complete his self-salvation. His initiation journey is then from innocence to maturity. At last, Amir becomes a brave, righteous, kind and mature man.This thesis will analyze the leading role Amir’s initiation and changes from three perspectives: the theme, the character setting and the narration way. Firstly, the thesis introduces the novel in a brief way, the author Khaled Hosseini, as well as some domestic and overseas scholars’ reviews on it. Then the research purpose and practical meaning of this thesis would be listed in the background of present society. Secondly,the plot of the story will be analyzed based on the theme, so that the leading role Amir’s growth and development will be reflected. Thirdly, from the perspective of character setting in the initiation story, the characters of The Kite Rumner can be divided into three types: positive guides, negative guides and initiation companions.Both the guides and companions are helpful to the protagonist’s initiation journey.Through their influence, the protagonist learns to face his sin in the past and becomes mature. Fourthly, on the writing techniques, this novel uses an open-ending, the first person narration and flashback to tell the story. It ends with an open-ending, which leaves space for the readers to imagine. Based on the first person point of view in the flashback way, such a vivid and deep impression on the growth of the protagonist is left to the readers. Meanwhile, the kite is the soul of the novel, which runs through the whole story and is a symbol of friendship, honesty, loyalty, kindness, courage and so on. In addition, the "kite" also epitomizes the culture of Afghanistan, and it is an essential key to the development of the protagonist’s growth.This thesis is an analysis of The Kite Runner from the perspective of initiation story. The initiation process of the leading role Amir is significant to all the young people who are stuck in perplexities and confusions, which can encourage young people to pursue the beauty of human nature. |
