On The Cultural Vacancy And Translation Compensation In English Translation Of Chinese Traditional Culture

There exist rational,social and ideological characteristics in different culture,known as cultural vacancy.As a communication tool and a carrier of culture,how can we bridge this gap in translation work?Most studies based on the study of translation texts,seek to explore the process of principles of translation and effective means of compensation on the level of cultural vacancy words.Although ultimately,translation implemented in vocabulary,cultural vacancy actually exist on different levels,including vocabulary,grammar and rhetoric.What determines the effective carry of source cultural information into the target language is that how to develop comprehensive understanding of cultural phenomena in source texts from multi-angles and on multi-levels and accordingly,implement effective compensation.In this paper,the translation of Chinese traditional cultural texts into English is studied,in which translation examples are mostly derived from the English translation of the Achievements of Sui and Tang Dynasties' Landscape Painting.It aims to explore how to understand the phenomenon of cultural vacancy thoroughly,in the process of the translation of Chinese traditional cultural information into English;how to implement translation compensation from perspectives of rhythm,vocabulary,rhetoric and specific skill aspects,alleviate cultural vacancy properly,and prompt translation smoothly.This paper works on translation strategies towards cultural vacancy from four perspectives,including Chinese word formation characteristics,meaning blank,rhetorical character and vacancy of cultural skills.What is discovered is that original structure and aesthetic taste could be partially compensated through appropriate verse translation processing;amplification in translation,helps to make up for the information of the original cultural background;conversion in translation,helps to compensate for pale meanings as a result of straightforward presentation of original texts;faced with Chinese rhetoric which cannot be presented equivalently,rhetoric could be partially sacrificed,we keep more loyalty to the meaning than conforming to rhetoric styles rigorously.In addition,concerning some particularly important categories of Chinese traditional culture,this paper briefly introduces translation paradigms and basic translation strategies of international standardization program.
