The Study Of Folk Characters In Xiangyin Zilei Of 12 Villages Of Dongshan Town In Northern Wuyuan

This paper mainly deals with the folk characters in the book Xiangyin zilei of 12 villages of Dongshan Town in Northern Wuyuan,which is a Huizhou phonological dictionary written during the period of the Republic of China.First,folk characters in the book are thoroughly collected and sorted out.Secondly,based on their formation features,these folk characters are systematically classified into 10 major types,which offers a new insight into the structural theory of Chinese folk characters.Thirdly,textual criticism and detailed analyses are made to forty confusing Chinese folk characters and to twenty-five folk characters’ or homographs’ literal meanings left out by the authoritative dictionaries The Grand Chinese Characters Dictionary and Zhonghua Zihai,which attemps to directly help the revision of the two dictionaries,thus improving the quality of lexicography.At the end of the paper there is Appendix I,which is an orderly table of folk characters and of difficult pending folk characters in the book Xiangyin zilei of 12 villages of Dongshan Town in Northern Wuyuan.
