In early 20th century,weakness in national power and concomitant serious national crisis prompted China to seek ways to improve national quality,especially educational level of citizens.Since 1920s,film had act as a new method to meet entertainment needs of citizens,and more importantly,to' promote education popularization significantly,as a result of the fast development of film industry in the world.Deeply influenced by this trend,China introduced film as an education method to inspire civil wisdom in beginning of 1920s.As the leading role in the Republic of China's economic,cultural and educational development,Zhejiang Province performed well as a pioneer to apply films to educational activities.This article aims to analyze the social background and basis that supported the popularization of educational films in Zhejiang at that time.By referring to a great number of related literatures,this article focuses on the process of popularization of educational films in Zhejiang to give insight into the potential impact of educational films development on the society of Zhejiang,even the Republic of China.To get the panorama and details of the procedure of popularization of educational films in Zhejiang,the article makes great deal of literature views.This article includes four parts as follows:the first part introduces the history of the development of films,especially of educational films around the world;this part also analyzes the social background of educational films popularization in Zhejiang;the second part presents several resources supported by government by organizations and governments for development of educational films;the third part emphasizes on the actual situation and outcome in the process of popularizing from views of time,space and film contents;the forth part digs into the impact of popularization of educational films on society,especially on public awareness of films,assistance to education and government propaganda at that time.The retrospect to educational films development in Zhejiang in the period of the Republic of China is able to rich the academic ideas regarding the educational functions of films.From a higher viewpoint,as a mass media,film is acting as a very important role in the Chinese society modernization.Therefore,researches on this topic will also open up public minds about the relationship between mass media and modern social change.
