This article will talk about the theoreticalbasis of linear perspective, through the eye of optical history,or through the history of science. The first part is concentrating on the life events of Alhacen and his researchof optical science, especially laying emphasis on the aspects of Alhacen's theory which would lead to the birth of linear perspective. Then this paper verifies carefully about the spreading and acceptance of Alhacen's theory in the medieval Europe,as well as how this kind of optical theory affected medieval people's visual concept. In the following, this paper takes a lot of endeavor to make clear the cultural background when the linear perspective was under formation in the renaissancetime, and this part pays particular attentionto two very early texts about the recording of linear perspective, which were Leon Battista Alberti 's On Painting and Lorenzo Ghiberti'sThird Commentary. In the end is a special conclusion about how the theory of optics went into the birth of a theory of art,and this is just the story of the word ‘perspective'.
