Amy Tan is a distinguished contemporary Chinese-American woman writer whose literature works, replete with mysterious and strong oriental flavor and Chinese culture, frequently board the best seller list. In 2005, Amy Tan, who is expert in telling stories, published a novel Saving Fish from Drowning which is distinct from her previous novels in background and composition. Professor Lu Shuyuan put forward the methodical study of ecocriticism, namely, natural ecology inquiring natural world, social ecology investigating politics, economy and culture of human society, and spiritual ecology exploring human's inner emotional and spiritual world. With Lu Shuyuan's theory as the framework, and by close reading of the novel, this thesis attempts to analyze Amy Tan's Saving Fish from Drowning from the perspective of natural ecology, social ecology and spiritual ecology, aiming to explore the ecological thoughts and the root cause of ecological crises reflected in the novel. With the contemplation in the nature, protagonists feel love and learn to understand and tolerate others. This delightful spiritual change is the essence for the improvement of natural ecology and social ecology. The author hopes that the study can enrich the angles to study Amy Tan's novels and urge man to take ecological crises seriously, thereby achieving the harmonious relationship between man and nature, man and man, man and himself.
