This paper aims to discuss the reference and absorption of Chinese and western culture by two painters of the same period,Ren Yi and Klimt.At the end of the 19 th century,China and Europe had their own special historical background.with the trade between countries,the prosperity of commodity economy,the growth of the people and the change of people’s spiritual needs.They need a medium to express self-identity,and portraiture is one of the media and plays a role in it.In order to promote the development of the art of portraiture,artists began to learn the achievements of Chinese and western culture in the creation of portrait painting,to meet the aesthetic needs of the nation,Ren Yi,and Klimt is undoubtedly representative of the two artists in this respect.The article through five parts to carry on the analysis of the two artists in the portrait painting creation of the east and west culture,the embodiment of culture.I.defining the definition of portraiture and describing the historical development of Chinese and western portraiture.Second,outline the " western painting east gradually" and " Chinese culture outside" during the Ming and Qing dynasties.Iii.analysis of ren yi and Klimt’s portrait style.Iv.focusing on the Ren Yi and the Klimt portraits themselves,to analyze the concrete embodiment of their cultural achievements.Finally,the influence of the two artists on the future generations is analyzed.Through this study,in order to have a deeper understanding of their painting style and the concept of painting,and to learn the art practice spirit of the contemporary art creators.
