As a spiritual food for children, children's literature has essential functions of education, inspiration and entertainment. However,in domestic market, the quality of the translated works of foreign children's literature remains uneven. At the same time, the research on the translation of children's literature in China has not obtained adequate attention from the academic circles. In this thesis,figure-ground theory of cognitive linguistics is creatively introduced into the research of children's literature translation. The author decides to study four versions of The Jungle Books, the masterpieces of Joseph Rudyard Kipling, the winner of Nobel Prize for Literature. This paper mainly explores the definition and characteristics of children's literature, summarizes the previous research results, concludes the historical development of children's literature translation in China, introduces the meaning of figure-ground theory, and sums up the law of translation through the comparative analyses. The author believes that there are figures and grounds in the sense groups of English children's literature and the figure means the primary image, while the ground refers to the object of reference for the figure. In the process of translation of children's literature, the translators must have a clear awareness of the specific images of figure and ground and organize the target language in accordance with the figure and ground of the original text,so as to make the translation more concise, fluent, and vivid, and otherwise to make mistakes of mistranslation and missing translation easily. It is hoped that this paper will provide some referential value for the readers and translators regarding this field.
