| Chinese Opera plays a vital role in Chinese traditional culture and has been appealing Chinese audiences for a long time.Along with the development of Chinese status in the global stage and the promotion of “Chinese Culture Going-out” strategy, the translation of Chinese Operas are attracting more attention from the academic circle.Peking Opera epitomizes the Chinese Operas, thus,it is sure an important part of “Chinese Culture Going-out” strategy. However, there are difficulties and barriers so far in the intercultural transmission of Peking Opera. To deal with it,the English Translation Series of a Hundred Peking Opera Classics has been listed in the major projects of National Social Science Fund by the Department of Education. The project is conducted by China’s National Opera Research Center,Renming University of China, and the School of Arts,Beijing Foreign Studies University. It aims at the global dissemination of Chinese Operas through translating 100 Peking Opera Classics into English.Until now,the first 10 books have been published. The thesis takes three of them as samples to study their translation strategies from intercultural perspective. The thesis is consisted of six parts. The first part is the introduction. In this part, the research background is introduced.Under the guidance of “Chinese Culture Going-out” strategies, the translation of Peking Opera attracts more attention. What’s more, research on Peking Opera translation from the intercultural perspective is seldom done.In addition, research questions, research objectives and research methodology are also introduced. The second part is literature review. In this part, intercultural communication, the relationship between intercultural communication and translation and the relationship between intercultural communication and Peking Opera translation are explained. For intercultural consideration, the translation must conquer the differences between source language culture and target language culture firstly.Secondly,it is necessary to balance the source language culture and target language culture. The source language cultural elements must be maintained as many as possible.Meanwhile, the translation should not hinder the understanding to the target language readers. It also reviews the studies on translation of Chinese Operas both in China andabroad. From the literature review,it is known that,up to now, research on Operas translation mainly focuses on Kunqu Opera.Studies on Peking Opera translation need to go further. In the third part, cultural elements in Peking Opera are classified.Firstly, the concerning concepts and classifications about culture are presented.Based upon these, the cultural elements in Peking Opera are put into tangible and intangible ones. The fourth part is the core of the thesis. It analyzes the translation strategies of tangible cultural elements and intangible cultural elements and is found that literal translation and compensation are employed in translating tangible cultural elements, and free translation and compensation are adopted in translating intangible cultural elements. After that, the motivations behind the selection of translation strategies are expounded by applying multimodal theory and text type translation theory.By the co-appearance of images and texts, signifiers and signifieds of Chinese special elements can form unities in target language readers’ minds when Chinese classics are rendered out.Especially, the different positions of images and texts, semantic information are better expressed.Text type translation theories well explaines some losses of Chinese cultural elements in the main body part. The main body texts belong to the informative category, and the first purpose of this text type translation is to transmit information. Thus,it is believed that, comprehensively, the translation strategies adopted well conquer the intercultural differences and keep the SL cultural elements properly. The fifth part is conclusion. It concludes the major findings of the research, research limitations and research prospect. |
