A Report On Escort Interpreting For CDB Gas Project

Along with the deepening of reform and opening-up,China actively engages in the international division of labor and conforms to globalization tendency.Improved investment environment and market condition result in an increasing number of foreign investment in China.Some domestic large-scale engineering projects proceed in the way of cooperation with foreign partners,therefore international cooperation projects are flourishing.At the meanwhile,the society has an increasing demand for project interpreters.By the generalization of the author's escort interpreting experience in CDB gas project which is a Sino-foreign jointly developed natural gas project,this report analyzes skills and rules in escort interpreting,especially for engineering project interpreting,aiming at providing precious experience and reference for interpreters who work on escort interpreting.All the cases studies are collected from the author's practice and learned from achievements of former researchers.Activities of this project mainly include technical guidance of design,commissioning and operation from engineers to contractors.This report introduces the project overview,features and requirements for interpreting and stresses the importance of interpreting preparation.It discusses major problems in the process of interpreting,namely lack of professional background,cultural diversity,linguistic difficulties and unclear cognition of the interpreter's roles.It summarizes measures adopted in escort interpreting with specific cases: terminologies accumulation and professional knowledge acquisition,overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers,interpreting strategies such as amplification,omission and reorganization,and full communication with clients and non-verbal tactics.Furthermore,the author presents reflection as well as suggestion for the entire interpreting to underscore the importance of improvement of interpreter's quality and ability in the practice.Drawing a conclusion that measures such as collection of professional knowledge and terminology,proper application of interpreting strategies,and copying with cultural diversity can improve the quality and effect of project escort interpreting,this report further illustrates capabilities which a qualified project escort interpreter should have.The author hopes that interpreting preparation,barriers and measures summarized in this report could serve as a valuable reference for interpreters and researchers in relevant areas.
