This paper is a report on the translation techniques of Chinese hedges in Marine Diesel Engine.Based on the translation practice of Marine Diesel Engine, the paper firstly introduces the translation task, then reviews the translation process by elaborating pre-translation preparation, process description and post-translation.The third chapter, taking the hedges in Marine Diesel Engine as the object of study, defines and classifies them from the perspective of semantics with further illustrations for each class of hedges. Then,on the basis of this classification, five kinds of processing methods are put forward by method of case analysis:the substitution of words, conversion, level shift, generalization, and four ways to dealing with adjective-predicate sentences.Through the task introduction and case analysis, the results are summarized as follows:for the hedges which have corresponding English words without influencing the original semantic meaning,we mainly employ equivalent words to achieve the translation.Differences between Chinese and English make literal translation of some hedges against English habits, thus we choose to adopt level shift and conversion. But some hedges are more specific in literal meaning, and the intention is to express the general logic,so the translator chooses the method of generalization. Finally, four ways to dealing with the adjective predicate sentences are listed:translating them into four sentence patterns of "S + be + SC","It + be + SC ","S+v.t.+O",existential sentence and English adjectives as attributives. However, the translator tends to comprehensively adopt the above skills during the practice in order to objectively present concise translation to readers as much as possible.
