A Report On Omission And Sentence Combination In The English Version Of Marine Diesel Engine

Shipping industry is very important for the development of our country's economy,while the marine diesel engine is the main power supply for ships at sea at present and in the future.To some extent,translating the material of the marine diesel engine into English version is helpful for institute of marine engineering to carry out bilingual education and promote the development of the technology of diesel engines.And the material contents belong to technical text.What translating skills are adopted is worth studying.This paper is a translation practice report on studying Chinese-English translation in some contents of Chapter 3 from Marine Diesel Engine.During the translation,the author found that there are lots of repetitions in words and short sentences in the source text,which should be avoided in English version.Under the guidance of Nord's fidelity principle,the author discusses the adoption of omission and sentence combination when translating the Chapter 3.The author chooses some typical cases from 10,000 words of the translation material and analyzes the specific cases of using these two skills one by one.Omission includes the omission of noun,verb,reason logic,language logic and recursive elements.Sentence combination includes translating clauses into subject,predicate,attribute,adverbial parts,which are made into a sentence with other clauses,or translating the sentences which have close relations into complex sentences.The application of omission and sentence combination makes the translated text accurate and concise.The completion of this translation practice not only is available to students who learn this material for specialized knowledge and English improvement,but also makes contributions to promoting the development of shipping industry.Moreover,the author hopes this report can provide reference to translators who translate technical articles like marine diesel engine in the future.
