As one kind of causative constructions,resultatives has been one of central issues for linguistic study for its complexity in terms of semantic relationships and syntactic representations,by which great interests and attentions of many grammatical researchers at home and abroad are aroused before long.To this day,they have been competing to investigate and testify these hot research topics in its theoretical foundation,which shows its great importance in the field of theoretical and applied study in linguistics.For these linguists and researchers of language conducted plenty of theoretical studies from various perspectives,its abundant achievements in worth can play a contributory role in more relevant research studies in future.Meanwhile,the limitations would also be stood out by scholars in linguistics who are enthusiastic about exploring the study of the acquisition for English resultative construction.Hence,it is necessary to correct and certify various blunders occurring in the process of studying to fill up blanks in its theoretical foundation.Besides,English resultative construction's structural conceptions,mutual affects between such construction and verbs as well as its suppression to verbs from the aspect of theory are explored in order to be conducive to reveal remaining problems in the acquisition of English resultative construction for subjects,even providing more practical suggestions and achieving theoretical arguments for the teaching and learning of various grammatical constructions.This study conducts a research of the acquisition of English resultative construction by investigating 90 Chinese-speakers who are on the behalf of three different English proficiency levels.These subjects are required to complete an English integrated test of English resultative construction on the behalf of three different English proficiency levels,along witha subsequent individual interview.Through the statistical approaches of Excel and SPSS 16.0,the available data collected by them are used to figure out main findings,by which some suggestions could be offered to conduce to a better teaching and studying of English resultative construction,even other various constructions.Under the theory of constructional grammar,it tries to answer the following research questions: 1.Is there a relationship between Chinese English learners' language proficiency level and their acquisition of English resultative constriction? 2.Which type of English resultative construction is easier to acquire for Chinese learners? Which type is more difficult? 3.Is Chinese English learners' acquisition of English resultative construction more accurate than canonical structure of result? 4.Is language transfer involved in the acquisition of English resultative construction by Chinese English learners?Through making several discussions and analyses for the study on English resultative construction for subjects who are split into three groups in this research,the findings can be shown as follows.First,there exists a positive correlation between subjects' acquisition of English resultative construction and their English proficiency levels.Second,they are tested to demonstrate that the acquired usage of Selected Resultative Construction is more accurate for them,while that of Unselected Resultative Construction can be found to be the most difficult.Third,compared with the acquisition of English resultative construction,it has been figured out that canonical causative constructions are preferred in terms of the output of English expressions for them.Finally,the influence of first language is indeed involved in their acquisition of English resultative construction,both positive and negative.That is,subjects would be accurate to positively translate sentences between English and Chinese when the two expressions are similar in terms of structure and sequence,whereas they would fail to do correct transfers on account of their misunderstandings caused by cultural differentiation and grammatical misuses of structures.As a result,some beneficial suggestions of teaching can be summarized as follows.First,English teachers ought to introduce constructional conceptions to students,in order that they can recognize some new understandings on sentence structures as well as the idea thatconstructions refer to a combination of form and meaning.Second,it is suggested that English teachers add cross-language comparisons into class,so as to strengthen students' awareness about linguistic differences.Because of that,it is beneficial to lessen the influence of negative transfer on students and facilitate their acquisition of grammatical rules for various English constructions.
