| Since its publication in 2008,the novel of Tui Na by Bi Feiyu has aroused heated social attention due to its unique theme on blind people,numbers of literary prizes it has won and the continual visual adaptations of it.In fact,it was around the time when Mo Yan won the 2012 Nobel Prize that Howard Goldblatt and his wife Sylvia Li-chun Lin started to translate Tui Na.Massage,its English translation,came into publication in 2014 by Penguin Group.However,apart from several English book reviews,there has been no academic journal article or dissertation on Goldblatt’s and Lin’s translation of Tui Na.Therefore,this dissertation selects Tui Na and its English translation of Massage as its research object,seeking to answer these questions: What changes and phenomena have taken place from Tui Na to Massage? What strategy of the translators can these changes and phenomena reveal? How is the English translation’s spread and acceptance in English-speaking countries?Guided by the theoretical perspectives of Professor Xie Tianzhen’s Yijiexue,this dissertation is a descriptive research on Massage and its acceptance based on adequate data and detailed analysis.The dissertation contains four chapters.Chapter One briefly introduces its research origin and research questions,literature review,theoretical perspective,research methodology and research significance.Chapter Two deals with the many changes and phenomena within the translation process,including the title,dialogues of characters,cultural factors,key concepts of traditional Chinese medicine,idioms and folk sayings,etc.Toward the end of this chapter,translators’ strategy is summarized and compared with strategies in The Moon Opera and Three Sisters.Chapter Three discusses the spread and acceptance of Massage from aspects of publication,market sales,literary reviews,reader responses and promotion of film adaptation.Chapter Four summarizes the aforementioned contents,draws the dissertation’s conclusions,and reflects on its limitations.Through the research,we can conclude the two translators’ balanced strategy in the translation process of Tui Na,that is a consideration of the original author and text as well as of target readers and target cultural backgrounds.During the translation process,the translators’ strategy may not always stay the same.It may differ in dealing with different contents.As for acceptance,the English readers generally appreciate the novel’s theme and Bi’s humorous language while making criticism on his sweeping statements and the abrupt use of metaphors. |
