Woody Allen is a heterogeneous at Hollywood, since 1960s his getting involved in the film, he insisted on independent production and filming,with absolute artistic freedom, he stands proudly beyond the flood of Hollywood cultural industry. Woody Allen is one of the few directors who focus on the perspective of intellectual lives and their thoughts, he tried to express and profound analyze the modern people’s spiritual anguish and predicament with a critical point of view against the reality,but with his good humor to ridicule and banter, which also formed a tragic "Woody Allen" comedy of intellectuals. Because of the deep humanistic concern in his works, he was called "the only intellectual in the American film industry". As Allen is a film director,screenwriter and performer, his works also inevitably had the personal experience and thoughts, and his intellectual life and aesthetic experience also provides the artistic image and the theme for his film, thus he is granted the privilege of writing as the "author". This paper aims to excavate the "intellectuals" identity of Woody Allen as a director his most important qualities in the projection and display of the films, and analyze the offbeat style and cultural significance given by this identity. This paper discusses in the following parts:Chapter Ⅰ, Woody Allen’s intellectual identity is traced and confirmed, this part is combed mainly from two aspects, firstly, Allen’s early growth experience and as a auteur,his unconscious identity construction with a strong sense of self expression in writing;secondly, the analysis of the inevitable of the true image of Allen himself in the film projection. At the same time, this chapter plays an important role, confirms Allen’s intellectual identity and his reflection in the work, and in the following three chapters how to light and develop the intellectual as a kind of identity and spirit in his movies is discussed.Chapter Ⅱ,the intellectual image of Woody Allen in the film is analyzed,and based on the Jewish "stranger" and " flaneur" of Woody Allen’s typical identity,combined with the real experience of director’s real experience, the cultural significance revealed in the film is analyzed.Chapter Ⅲ, combined with the ideological characteristics of Woody Allen, the three distinct cultural theme in the film is discussed, namely, the plight of survival, ethics and art concept, and points out that how Allen’s belief in existentialism and atheism influences his attitude towards life and art creation is pointed out, which shows the pessimism in the director’s deep heart and tortures of the contemporary intellectuals’spiritual crisis.Chapter Ⅳ, in this chapter, we will return to Woody Allen’s comedy itself, to analyze what kind of skills and tactics he used to ridicule, banter and satire. First of all,the black humor that director created between the comedy and tragedy is pointed out, the light comedy which is not lack of warm and funny in his work is clarified. These two kinds of comedy style show the psychological characteristics of his sincere love of life though the pessimism in his sprit is not avoidable. Secondly, based on the theory of"Antinomy of comedy", how the comedy effect in Allen’s movies achieved is analyzed from two aspects with both the form of the character and the film.
