A Study On HouHanShuBuZhu

HouHanShuBuZhu is Hui Dong’s representative work in his historical field. Fan Ye’s book already had many defects and errors in the process of writing itself,and also Li Xian’s notes to HouHanShu had omissions and mistakes inevitably. There’s no new annotation had appeared going through the Song Dynasty and the Ming Dynasty. To the Qing Dynasty, Hui Dong made twenty-four volumes for filling, that was a supplement and perfection to Li Xian’s notes.The method of Hui Dong annotating HouHanShu mainly included five kinds. He emendated characters to supplement the omissions and check up the errors from the root.Meanwhile he tried hard to collect the lost materials widely and absorbed the achievements of the reorganization and researches of the predecessors extensively. Not noly refuting and correcting the fallacy of others,but also attaching his own views and opinions, Hui Dong carried out a comprehensive interpretation research on HouHanShu.The content of his supplementary notes to HouHanShu is mainly including explaination of the words and names, the distinguishing of historical materials, the supplementation of the losing text, the correction of the textual research, seeking the truth of the Eastern Han Dynasty History, the interpretations and comments. Although there are some mistakes and shortcomings, the high level of writing and historical value of HouHanShuBuZhu is obviously.HouHanShuBuZhu was a significant progress to Li Xian’s notes, Hui Dong had advanced the research of HouHanShu to a new stage. Many scholars had also began to research Fan Ye’s book after Hui Dong. On the basis of inheriting and absorbing Hui Dong’s annotations largely, Wang Xianqian had wrote HouHanShuJiJie in the late Qing Dynasty, that was an agglomeration of the notes. Li Xian’s notes and Hui Dong’s supplementary notes and Wang Xianqian’s agglomeration of all the notes are three representative works in the process of the arrangement and study of HouHanShu.HouHanShuBuZhu can be regarded as a critical link between the past and the future.In the course of the research on HouHanShu, Hui Dong’s supplementary notes to HouHanShu is indeed an important work. HouHanShuBuZhu has important significance to our futher study on HouHanShu and the Eastern Han Dynasty History, its rich historical value has yet to be fully explored and exploited.
