| In English-Chinese translation,even a single word may involve multi-sided thoughts;literal translation may render translations ambiguous or non-idiomatic.Class shift in translation shifts brought up by Catford can help translators to solve this problem,for example,turning verbs in English into nouns of Chinese may bring a smoother and more fluent translation version.The present translation practice report,taking English-Chinese translation Impact Assessment of IFPRI’s Capacity-Strengthening Work,1985-2010(Excerpt)as an example,specifically analyzes class shift in assessment report and offers introspection and summary of experience.This thesis consists of the following parts:the project description,introduction,description of translation process,theoretic statement and literature review,feature analysis of assessment report,feature and frequency analysis of class shift in assessment report,frequency analysis between assessment report and scientific and technical text(geological prospecting)and conclusion.The introduction includes the background,content and significance of the research.The description of the translation process includes the preparation before the interpretation,contrastive analysis between English and Chinese parallel texts,auxiliary means and unification of acronyms,translation work,difficulties and solutions,revising and introspection after the translation.In the theoretic statement and literature review,the author expounds translation shift theory by Catford and then describes the evaluation and expectation to translation shift theory given by famous domestic and overseas scholars.The feature analysis of assessment report focuses on the objectivity,conciseness and smoothness.In the frequency analysis between assessment report and scientific and technical text(geological prospecting),the thesis analyzes class shift with examples from the translated text,including the shifts of verbs,nouns,adjectives,adverbs and prepositions,and then summarizes the frequencies of class shift and analyzes its reason.Finally the thesis conducts a contrastive analysis between assessment report and scientific and technical text(geological prospecting)by explicating stylistic features of assessment report so as to adopt more effective translation strategies and methods to realize quality translationThrough the translation practice report,the thesis hopes to find the rules of class shift in assessment report.Knowing preference of class shift in assessment report,translator may give priority to class shift according to relevant rules when confronting thorny problems.This may broaden translators’thinking and help achieve translation equivalence in a way.Simultaneously the translation practice report improves the understanding of assessment report with stylistic features of this kind of text so as to offer experience for future translation practice. |
