The Social Countermeasures In The Floods Of Wuhan Area In 1930s—a Study Based On The Reppoters Of The Public Opinion

Wuhan area is located in the southeast of Hubei,the hinterland of Jianghan Plain,at the confluence of Yangtze River and Hanjiang River.Wuhan enjoys a great reputation of traffic hub in China and is also the second largest city during the period of the Republic of China.However,because of the special geography,land reclamation and destruction in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River Region since the Song dynasty,the flood disaster is so increasingly serious in this area that it becomes the major natural disaster,especially during the Republic of China.Yangtze River Basin suffered two serious flooding disasters in 1930s.And they have many similar characteristics,for instance,large water potential,long duration and wide spread.Furthermore,Hubei becomes the centre of two flooding disaster areas,especially Wuhan.This has brought huge losses to the local.After the flood,whether the government or non-government organization have taken positive relief measures.Meanwhile,newspapers,as the representative of modern media has appeared and brought new energy for the activities of disaster relief.It plays a significant role not only in the report and promotion of flood,but also in providing disaster relief measures,offering advice,media supervision and so on.This thesis aims to analyzes the reports and comments of Wuhan’s flooding disaster and relief activities from all circles,such as Takunpao,Shen Daily,Republic Daily,Eastern Miscellanies,Daily Journal of Huibei Flooding Disaster and Wuhan Daily in 1939s.The author can have a deep knowing about the flooding disaster and coping strategies from all circles at that time.All of these provide reference for today’s disaster relief.The dissertation is consist of three chapters.The first chapter introduces the flooding disaster history and provides the basic information of the flooding disaster in Hubei in 1930s,and analyzes the reasons of the growing flooding disasters and the reports and comments of the disaster relief at that time.In the second chapter,through analyzing the reports and comments form different newspapers and periodicals to explore how the different Republic department cope with flooding disaster in 1930s.In the end,the third chapter provides the problems emerged during the relief disaster activities from some articles analysis in the newspapers,promote the relief disaster system further improved through a reflection process.
