China 70 th anniversary parade is one of the most significant events in 2015 in China.A large number of reports have been published by domestic and foreign media.Since parade is a sensitive military activity featured with political quality, foreign newspapers inevitably have bias and misconceptions in their coverage of this event. The western media tend to be alienated in the reporting tendency, and the attention to this event has different emphases. They focus on advanced weapons and equipment, disarmament plans, military strength, the presence of the summit, the Sino Japanese relations, but most of them are subjective. It's meaningful and necessary to find out the implied attitudinal meaning in western reports. This thesis analyzes military parade and Appraisal Theory to analyze the attitudinal meaning of western reports. The Appraisal theory, developed by Martin and his colleagues in 1990 s,is interpersonal framework concerned with lexico-grammatical resources used to express attitudes, its source and its strength. The Appraisal framework comprises three major systems,Attitude,Engagement and Graduation. It's of great significance to analyze the hidden ideology of foreign reports behind the political event with the attitude system. This thesis selects 30 reports from The Washington Post and The Daily Mail and tries to prove the common sense that there exist some evaluative resources expressing journalist's attitude and viewpoints in those reports.Besides, the author analyzes explicit and implicit attitudes and a general proportion of each attitude resources in the category. In this way, three outcomes occur as follows:(1)the attitudinal resources are widely used in these reports about Military Parade in 2015.In these reports, appreciation accounts for the most(37%),followed by judgment resources(34%)and affect resources(30%);(2)positive attitude resources are a little higher than negative resources in these report, but the gap is not big;(3)explicit attitudes are predominant than implicit attitudes. In conclusion, this author tries to study the distribution of all attitude resources under the Appraisal Theory. The thesis provides a framework for further explorationof the attitudinal meaning in news reports. On the other hand, this thesis provides some inspiration for English reading and writing.
