Chinese ancient export porcelain is renowned in the world. As a dispensable part of human's civilization, the porcelain enjoys the high value and provides a direct way for people to know the science, art and other aspects of that time.Chinese Export Porcelain in North America is written by a professor in ancient export porcelain study in North America. In this book, over 400 pictures are collected and some of which are never displayed before. All these show the unprecedented value of this book.Although there are many books about this topic are translated into Chinese, the studies on the translation of the captions of the porcelain pictures are rare. Therefore,it is significant to do a study on this kind of translation.Under the guidance of the skopos theory, the translator based on the purpose of making the Chinese readers easily understand, appreciating and accepting the book and the captions of the picture, literal translation, liberal translation and other translation methods(including zero translation and creation translation)are adopted by translator,so as to make the abstract picture and words could directly convey the right information to the readers. In this process, the role of the translator is fully played.Through the whole translation process,to achieve a good translation, the translator needs to acquire the basic ceramic terms and necessary knowledge about traditional Chinese culture.Translation is not limited to translate one language to another, and it involves the mix and communication between two cultures. It is hoped that this thesis could offer some suggestions for future translators.
