The Analysis Of Chinese And Western Apologies

In the general background of economic globalization and rapid development,economic and cultural exchanges between countries are increasingly closer.At the same time,different cultures integrate and collide with each other.Language is the main means of communication.Therefore,the smooth communication activities are based on precise language expressions.However,every language has its own composition,writing,pronunciation and other aspects,which are different from other languages.As a result,people are affected by their local culture,exposed culture and environment at that time in the communication process.It is necessary for us to speak rightly and properly.Chinese and western cultures are two totally different.Chinese and English,as the two languages with most users and widest scope in the world,demonstrate distinctive differences.Hence,they present a strong contrast.Apology expressions have functions of restoring the damaged interpersonal relationship,relieving guilty feeling and highlighting personal charisma.It has been the focus of domestic and overseas researches.The paper selects two sitcoms respectively from China and the United States—Friends and Home with Kids.With case studies of apology expressions,the paper analyzes differences of Chinese and western apology expressions and their causes.The paper is divided into five parts.The first part is introduction,mainly introducing research situations of domestic and overseas studies on apology expressions as well as researches on apologies and cross-cultural communication field.The second part expounds basic ways of expressions of Chinese and English apologies.It generally describes differences of Chinese and western apologies in occurrence frequency and apology strategy.Besides,it is taken as the premise of the third party.Part three takes dialogues of Friends and Home with Kids.The paper centers on apology occasions,strategy differences and differences of apology occurrence frequency,use and response differences of groups at various classes in China and western countries.In addition,it analyzes causes of these differences.Cultural factors,way of thinking are major factors leading to occurrence of Chinese and western apologies.On the basis of the above analyses and comparisons,the research proposes suggestions for how to apology in the fourth party as well as enlightenments for cross-cultural communications and practices of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.The final part is conclusions,which summarizes the paper's research accomplishments and deficiencies.
