The Gene: An Intimate History is another influential work by Siddhartha Mukherjee,which was released in 2016 by Scribner.It chronicles the history of the gene,but also delves into the personal genetic history of Mukherjee's family,including mental illness.The Gene discusses the power of genetics in determining people's health and attributes,but it also has a cautionary tone to not allow oneself to be defined by genetic predispositions.The text of this translation task is the excerpts of this masterpiece(from Chapter 21 to Chapter 24).This part mainly describes the pathogeneses and symptoms of a wide variety of genetic diseases.It also probes into their treatments of those diseases.This translation report includes four chapters.Chapter One makes a brief introduction to the translation task.Chapter Two states the whole course of translation,mainly covering pre-translation,while translation and post translation.In Chapter Three,the author classified and summarized various problems during translation,and then made some representative analyses of selected typical cases respectively under the guidance of Nida's theory of Functional Equivalence.For instance,when it came to difficult long sentences,the author largely adopted division method in conjunction with employment of other translation strategies,namely,conversion of part of speech,supplement,omission,combination.Chapter Four mainly deals with understandings and perceptions the author gained through the translation.
