An English-Chinese Translation Report On CDB Gas Gathering Station B EOM

In recent years,people`s demand for oil and gas has been increasing gradually,thus leading to the strengthening of international cooperation and more emergence of joint-ventured projects.To achieve development of joint-ventured projects,translators play a crucial role to help both sides overcome language barriers.CDB(Chuandongbei)High Sour Gas Project is collaborated by America Chevron Energy Company and China Natural Petroleum Cooperation(CNPC);translators are vital members in it.This report,taking CDB EOM(Electronic Operation Manual)translation from English to Chinese as a case study,attempts to explore some issues of English to Chinese translation of oil and gas operational texts.This report,guided by the Skopos theory,discusses two major difficulties,terminology and passive voice,in the translation of CDB Gas Gathering Station B EOM,and puts forward corresponding translation techniques.There are four chapters in this report,which are: description of the project,translation process of project,two translation difficulties and solutions,and translation project evaluation and suggestions.By analyzing the differences between English and Chinese,the author classifies the problems in terminology and passive voice sentences in the first place,and puts forward some translation techniques for each difficulty,and ensures the smooth completion of the translation task.After case study,the author sums up some translation techniques for terminology and passive voice translations in the area of oil and gas operational texts as follows: first,for terminology translation,literal translation(including nominalized literal translation technique,adaptive literal translation technique,superimposed literal translation technique and omitted literal translation technique),liberal translation and complementary translation can be applied to achieve professional and accurate translation purpose;second,for English passive voice sentence translation,syntactic linearity,English passive voice sentence translated to Chinese active voice sentence,and English passive voice sentence translated to Chinese subjectless sentence can be used to fulfill the coherence and fidelity.During the translation practice and reflection of translation experience guided by Skopos theory,the author summarizes the above coping translation techniques,and hopes they will be helpful for the translators in oil and gas operational text translation.
