A Study Of Transferred Epithet And Its Translation In Shakespeare's And Cao Yu's Plays From The Perspective Of Conceptual Blending

Transferred epithet is an effective device to present the characteristics of nation languages.With the development of cognitive linguistics,the scholars considered that transferred epithet was not only a rhetorical device,but also,the way of perceiving and thinking.Therefore,based on the previous researches,and with Shakespeare's four tragedies and Cao's three plays as the corpus,this study analyzed the feature and classification of transferred epithet,and discussed the transferring rules in transferred epithet firstly.Besides,it analyzed the conceptual blending networks of transferred epithet in all the plays.In addition,it tried to construct the translation pattern of transferred epithet from the perspective of CBT,and applied it to the analysis of the translating process of Bian Zhilin,Zhu Shenghao,and Liang Shiqiu,Barnes and Wang Zuoliang while they translating the transferred epithet in the plays.The thesis found out that:first,transferred epithet in the seven plays can be classified into 4 types:transferring human's feature onto things,transferring thing modifiers onto other things,transferring human affection onto sense organs or behavior,and transferring thing modifiers onto human.The language structures of transferred epithet present their different features in Shakespeare's and Cao Yu's plays.The application of transferred epithet in Cao Yu's plays appears less frequent than Shakespeare's,and the structures of transferred epithet in Cao Yu's plays are less flexible than the structure of transferred epithet in Shakespeare's.Second,there are more samples of mirror network transferred epithet,single-scope blending transferred epithet and double-scope blending transferred epithet in the corpus.Third,the cognitive mechanism of Chinese and English transferred epithet do not distinguish with each other,their networks of conceptual blending are much the same.But because of the difference between Chinese and English language,the transferred epithet in Shakespeare's plays differs from it in Cao Yu's plays in a certain degree from structural and semantic level.Chinese is the typical analytic language,while English is a comprehensive language,so the order of word in Shakespeare's plays is flexible.It is the same as semantic relationship.Four,according to the translation pattern of transferred epithet under CBT,we can see that no matter the translation of transferred epithet in Shakespeare's plays or in Cao Yu's plays,the translator will take their understanding of source text,ways of expression and cultural differences into consideration,conduct different translating methods towards different transferred epithet.Five,when analyzing the feature of translating process of transferred epithet from the perspective of conceptual blending,we can see that the translator has a cognitive interpretation of the original text,as well as the corresponding cognitive interpretation of the target language.They will ignore or add some words or forms in the process of translation.Owing to the different ways of the two input spaces' projections,the translation methods are not the same.The thesis sums up the following three translation methods:translation method of complete corresponding,translation method of semi corresponding,and translation method of none corresponding.
