Travel writings as a reflection of the social life possess value in the study of literature, society, geography and history. The translation of Chinese travel writing written by foreign writers can help Chinese readers to review the social history of the country from a different angle, and provide reference for the study of Chinese modern history and travel literary translation. This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the fourth and fifth chapters of A Woman in China written by Australian writer Mary Gaunt.A Woman in China is based on the author's real experience, presenting the status of Chinese society in early period of the Republic of China. The report consists of five chapters.Chapter One introduces the project including background, significance and requirements.Chapter Two presents preparations for the translation.Chapter Three gives a brief introduction about semantic translation and communicative translation raised by Peter Newmark.Chapter Four analyzes the translation from lexical and syntactical levels.Chapter Five concludes limitations and suggestions based on the analysis of the translation of the excerpts.According to Peter Newmark's text type theory, travel writings mainly contain expressive function. Therefore,in the process of translation, the author of the report mainly implements semantic translation supplemented by communicative translation. The case studies focus on analyzing how to apply the translation theory of Peter Newmark to the practical cases from the lexical and syntactical levels.Specific translation methods are applied for proper noun, including free translation, literal translation, transliteration and translation with notes. The issues of attributive clauses, adverbial clauses, passive sentences and long sentences are discussed and some specific translation techniques are summarized. The author hopes the report can provide reference for improving translation quality of travel writings.
