Rhetorical Research Of "Han Feizi" Fables

The use of fable accounts for a high proportion and the fables appear in system and in a large scale which is the punchline and feature of the work,Hanfeizi.From the rhetorical perspective,adopting exemplification,comparison and statistical method,this thesis studied the fables in Hanfeizi and mainly focus on three aspects above: the relation between rhetoric and the literal meaning;the relation between rhetoric and the implied meaning;the pragmatic and rhetoric value of fable.This thesis start from the syntactic research including figure of speech,context,discourse,pragmatic and other aspects.The author draw some conclusions: First,the fables in Hanfeizi are flexible,changeable and expressive in syntactic aspects which contribute to the exclusive stylistic feature,especially the use of question that has a great pragmatic value in joining discourses and making them coherent.Second,the figure of speech in fables is the author’s own subjective application and elaborating device of the whole fable that plays an active role in shaping the image such as the image of animal,the image of characters and moreover,in categorization of those images.Third,the fable group in Hanfeizi has obviously concerns on the implied meaning that makes the fable group organized well.Fourth,the fables in Hanfeizi have strong pragmatic functions and effects.
