This is a project report on the translation of the first two sections in Chapter Six extracted from The Interpretation of Dreams, which is written by the famous Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud.Much attention has been paid to the two parts in Chapter Six:condensation and the work of displacement. In addition,it gives explanations for the dream-thoughts and the dream-content,then accounts for the relations and differences. As is known to all,The Interpretation of Dreams is a classic book on psychology. It deeply brings to light the various mysteries hidden in the psychological levels. The dreams are described as "a shortcut to understanding the mental process of the subconscious" by Sigmund Freud, who sets a lot of dream cases in the book and goes into details about dreams from different perspectives.Although there are the limitations with reference to some views and logic existing in this book,it makes great contributions to the field of psychology, literature and education.Furthermore,it provides more directions and possibilities for the research of dreams. In the light of its genre, the translator needs to master some basic knowledge of psychology before translation, especially for the terms, and it is conducive to improving the translation process and level. On the other hand, the translator also finds it hard to understand the original itself sometimes in the course of translation. When attempting to make the translation understood to a certain degree, the author has to excel at utilizing some common flexible means in English-Chinese translation, and has the courage to break the grammar and syntax of the original, even to change in a proper way so as to translate the implicit meanings concealed in some sentences. In this project report, the translator selects a few sentences as the key analysis objects, then explain how to adopt the literal translation, extension, omission and other ways to complete the task, under the auspices of Tytler's Three Principles of Translation. What's more, some bright ideas and lessons will be presented in the end.
